FATHOM EVENTS –DETROIT - In the late '80s there was no bigger band than INXS. They were everywhere you looked including MTV, movie soundtracks, the radio late-night TV shows. Lead frontman Michael Hutchence lead the band and was both hypnotic and mesmerizing. INXS had a dynamic presence on stage that few performers possess and could work the crowd, any crowd, no matter if it was a small bar or Wembly Arena. The film, "Live Baby Live" captures much of that electric energy and is being shown for one night only through Fathom Events.
The live concert film is a set of live performances from the 1991 XS Tour when the band toured Paris, New York, Dublin, London, Chicago, Sydney, Montreal, Spain and more. In just a few years INXS went from being a frumpy college staple to a worldwide act. INXS started popping up on MTV but their albums, "Shaboo Shabbah" and "Listen Like Thieves" weren't making major headway. Frat house rock bands would cover their songs in the mid-'80s all while getting ignored on the radio and now these guys were big. REM opened the doorway to Alternative music and now the market seemed to be ready for these groups. Their quick ascension into a National presence had made them a household name. The band was on the Arsenio Hall Show and played to sold-out arenas worldwide. When the market changed INXS shot right to the top. Other bands that burst through that year were the Replacements, Echo and the Bunnymen, the Pogues and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Hutchence died by suicide in 1997 under mysterious circumstances. It was reported that he was under the heavy influence of alcohol and drugs. Some say that his passing was accidental but his death adds to their enigmatic but short reign. The band continued to sell chart-busting albums without the help of autotune and other technical advantage short cuts that are prevalent in today's music. Unlike today's music, this group had significant raw talent. They were simply a great rock band. This is quite a contrast compared to what we see in today's marketplace. It also brings back a lot of memories.
I was fortunate enough to see INXS right when they broke big in 1987 at Hill Auditorium in Ann Arbor, Michigan. They were just included in the horror film, "The Lost Boys" and were becoming an item on MTV. Their videos were played on the network every hour and their fan base was growing. They were promoting the "KICK" album and it was the one LP that put them on the map. The band was originally named after the Ferriss Brothers but gave the stage over to Hutchence and who became the face of the act. He delivered a striking presence and was highly animated. You couldn't take your eyes off of him and he had a commanding physical presence over his audience. INXS incorporated funk and dance into their sound and had a driving rock beat. They were also very loud and just fun to watch. The show was unforgettable and it was a powerful and moving experience. This film is rarely shown on the big screen and thanks to Fathom Events we can now get some insight on what made them tick. The film also serves as a time capsule because the next big musical movement was the Grunge Seattle sound just two years later.
