HOT METRO FINDS: Social Media Fans Do A Better Journalism Job With Queen and Adam Lambert Than Mainstream Media

The recent Queen tour with Adam Lambert has reached epic proportions on the web. It has literally continued with a life all its own. The fans are nothing short of fanatical and the audience is not only supportive but interactive. They have reported on the smallest details of the day to day activities of their hero Adam Lambert. The music of Queen has been given new life and meaning and rock and roll has a new face. That energy — that action — has permeated throughout the social media landscape and it is nothing short of amazing.

This sort of activity has brought as much as 155 people a minute to my websites. This isn’t paid web traffic but real people in real time talking about their musical adoration. The fans have journalistic integrity and will engage other fans to share a growing collection of live concert photos that the mainstream media have missed. They also have included video footage of concerts and have even recreated entire concerts on Youtube. These video clips have been strung together.

Queen and Adam Lambert WE WILL ROCK YOU, World Tour 2014

Queen and Adam Lambert WE WILL ROCK YOU, World Tour 2014

Meanwhile the mainstream media has been somewhat absent. The reports in Michigan were really offbeat and flat out weird. There was very little mentioned about the Queen show with Adam Lambert at the Palace of Auburn Hills but it was hardly anything noteworthy. Who ever wrote about seemed to miss the concerts popular significance on the pop culture landscape. After reading a couple of the local press reviews I am convinced that who ever wrote them didn’t even attend the concert — which makes their observations a complete fabrication. They piss on their public. Fair enough.

In contrast, the fans have over stepped their bounds and have filled in the journalist shoes and have delivered extensive concert information from the tours various cities including New York, Chicago and Atlantic City. There have been reports on Adam Lamberts fashions, his choice of eyewear, his shopping habits, and even fan art. There has been a rebirth of rock music in the popular mainstream and major media seems to have missed that. Maybe they don’t care. After all their bread and butter comes from doing reports on local government embezzlement, closed highways and school closings…. real pedestrian fare. That would never translate into a ravenous fan base under any circumstances.

Adam Lambert 2014 live on tour... the fans are taking the role as rock journalist

Adam Lambert 2014 live on tour… the fans are taking the role as rock journalist

There was that lackluster review from some reporter in Las Vegas. That guy may have attended the show but he was hardly a fan. His references about the shows content was so off base that I wonder if he really even knew what the songs were about. The early references to Queen’s first three albums were spotty and misguided but carried some sense of truth. There was a fantasy element about Queen’s early work but it never defined their entire career.  There seemed to be a bit of anger behind his words. In contrast to the fans and the band, the relationship that matters most, the mainstream media was totally left out.

This set list has brought the classic rock era in tune with a pop icon of this generation to make something sensational. It’s off the charts and it is a living, breathing, dynamo that has taken off to Australia, Asia and now the tour will go back to the UK.

Queen guitarist Brian May is somewhat taken aback and was reported to have said, “I’m not going to stop until my fingers fall off !!” I take great comfort in that because watching these guys play on stage is truly magical. When you see a rock band like this come together and see it touch generations young and old is truly amazing.

Adam Lambert 2014 On The Road With Queen

Adam Lambert 2014 On The Road With Queen

The fans are oblivious to the rank reviews and half hearted attempts to stay interested. They have taken the role of reporter, video VJ,  photographer and have stepped over mainstream media and are communicating to one another — fan to fan — and don’t give a damn about what what it thinks.

That is exciting. For us. For them. For everyone.

for sure, we love Adam and we love Queen.
Brian and Roger are the best, Brian will answer questions on twitter which i think is wonderful.
They deserve all the media we can give them, I am happy to help do that on social media.

To be fair, 99.9% of reviews have been positive (and the negative ones are really only in the US from same publications who also hated Freddie & Queen when they performed back in the day). But yeah, apart from the reviews North America media seem to be oblivious to what has been the most popular concert tour this year and it barely rates a mention. They have packed sold out stadiums worldwide – including venues Lady Gaga was unable to fill. Meanwhile other older rock bands are also doing better than most artists in other concert tours. Rock is enjoying a revival – at least in it’s live form. Maybe people are getting sick of autotuned voices, lip synching & canned instrumentals.

Queen fans have been steadily supportive since Freddie’s death, and enthusiastically before that. What you’re seeing now is the synergy of the high energy and devotion of the glamberts to their (and my) hero, Adam Lambert, together with the longterm devotion of Queen fans open to a new singer. Most, but not all have been won over to Adam’s spectacular take on the Queen catalog (never mimicking Freddie), but no one needs to be 100% on board. For Brian and Roger to so heartily endorse Adam as their frontman speaks volumes. And bringing in a younger, less old school singer (and did I say spectacularly talented?) may have lead to new interest by younger attendees, even if not categoricallyAdam Lambert fans.

All in all, as an original Queen fan and later a devoted Adam fan, this is a match made in the heavens.

This article is so true, I have been following Adams progress since American Idol, and it’s only because of the efforts of fans that the mainstream media have no been able to bury him with misinformation and downright lies. Most of this is laziness, (as you say most mainstream reporters simply don’t care as long as they get paid). But some has been malicious usually because of Homophobia or because they can’t get past his involvement with American Idol and think themselves too ‘Cool’ to give someone from that show credit where it’s due.
Queen have often suffered from similar problems, especially in the early days, they have never really been considered ‘Cool’ and even thought they are beloved of the general music audience they have often been derided by music ‘Critics’ Now they are older they suffer from Ageist prejudice with even people who claim to be ‘fans’ saying they should give it up and stop being embarrassing. Those people should stay in their bedrooms with their vinyl and VHS tapes and let the rest of us have fun.
New technology has put the power and influence into the hands of real fans like never before, we are no longer beholden to professional journalists, photographers and videographers or even record companies to be able to see what we want to see, thanks to the internet we don’t even have to be in the right place at the right time as was the case in the past. There are even ways and means to get around ticket touts if people cooperate with each other.
This can only benefit artists who are trying to make a living, and scares the hell out of all those who are just hangers on creaming off their earnings.

So true, everything about the disconnect between mainstream media and the vast, seething underbelly of Adam Lambert’s fan-based chronicles. Adam moves even just a hair, utters a sound, or tweets a word, and his fandom is awash in a groundswell of passion from the widest swath of ages, countries, and walks of life, inspiring infinite displays of the sincerest
flattery for any artist imaginable. Commentaries, blogs, essays, art, photos, and tweets abound as heartfelt adoration and abiding love approaching those of his legendary idols. And this, for a guy still reviled in certain circles for the very things that he is admired for: guts, pride, and extraordinary talent cached in a stunning bundle of pure joy. Mainstream media can hold the floodgates only for so long before the truth and breadth of Adam’s spell breaks loose.

I think I want to marry you!! Lol. Seriously, it has shocked me that this epic tour has not been more celebrated in mainstream media, but it’s also been a great satisfaction, and a screw you, to said media, that the concerts sold out and attendees have been extremely vocal in their awe at the performances. We love our ninjas and their ability to live stream when possible and the gorgeous pictures and videos they post almost before the applause dies down. I attended Auburn Hills, Philly, and Madison Square Garden. If not for my sorry financial state, I would have added the West Coast venues. To see Roger, Brian, and Adam interacting and having a blast was the highlight of my year. No backing tracks, no auto tune, no lip synching….. Like dying and going to rock ‘n roll Heaven.

Nothing new from the mainstream media, they have been giving Adam Lambert the cold shoulder for years, trying to minimize his talent. We the fans know the truth, Adam is the most talented (no auto-tune needed) charasmatic, gorgeous, sexy male singers around today. OVERWHELMINGLY UNDERRATED. I knew of Queen songs but never really spent much time on them. Now thanks to Adam, I am Obsessed with Queen. Went to 6 different concerts by various bands this summer and I can honestly say Queen + Adam Lambert in Chicago was by far the best. As an avid concert goer, this was the best concert I have ever been to. So worth the price of admission.

Whoa.. you spot on hit it.. The mediocre, lackluster and blatant ignoring of this amazing tour by the US Media is embarrassing and shows complete cluelessness as to what is important and noteworthy in Music. This Tour with Queen and Adam as the Lead is absolutely breathtaking. There is no other group, band, singer out there that compares to the collab of such talent. The Media covers Miley Cyrus rolling on the floor, the Kardashians being pigs basically instead of covering an iconic tour like this. Queen is still the best of Rock and Lambert is the best there is as a singer.. period.. Together .. something has happened which we won’t see again for a long time and The US again is embarrassing in it’s refusal to tell the world that there still is music worth hearing and going to see. Europe etc is in for an epic treat. Find another Band like Queen that exists today and find another singer as mega talented, charismatic that can fill the shoes of Mercury and then some… YOU CAN”T because they don’t exist.

Thank you! We Glamberts have always supported Adam and revel in this newly publicized collaboration with Queen. We have always, ALWAYS shared every little thing about him with the rest of the fandom and you’re right, we, the Glamberts and fans, often have the best pictures. We adore this man, for the astonishing performer he is but more importantly for the truly great person he is inside…thank you again <3

Thank you! We Glamberts have always, ALWAYS shared everything about Adam. This collaboration with Queen is showing more people who may not know of him what he can really do…and, man, CAN HE DO IT!! He is astonishing. We Glamberts adore him for the exceptional performer he is but more importantly for the truly great person he is inside. Oh, and the difference between a Glambert and a fan? A fan just has his music, a Glambert has his back…thank you again for a great piece

Your article tells it like it is with the mainstream media lack of “getting it” and it matches their lack luster excitement in 70 and 80’s when Queen was “a big deal”. So I’m not surprised the fans take on the reporting role. The exciting point is we the fans have available today Internet social media tools to spread the word on a Global stage like never before… Making our voice as loud or louder then main stream media. LONG LIVE QUEEN AND ADAM LAMBERT. ( looking forward to Adam Lambert’s third album and hope for a Queen + Adam Lambert album new music collaboration ).

Mainstream media was never interested anyway in Adam Lambert…beyond his associations with American Idol. Fans have always recognized what makes Adam special and now with Queen have created a synergy that has breathed new life into classic rock for the IPhone generation!

The Glamberts have been doing a better job than the media since the Season 8 American Idol tour when some fans realized it was well worth the money and effort to see a 15 minute LIVE Adam Lambert set. Also makes it great for those who can’t go to the shows because they can experience it through another fan’s review, pictures and video.

Yes leave it all up to us fans, we have their back. Mainstream may one day get it. They seemed to have gotten it for I Heart Radio in 2013, but they sure missed some tour news, especially with Queen + Adam Lambert in contention for BAND OF THE YEAR.

Thanking my lucky stars every day I was fortunate to see Queen with Adam Lambert in Vegas. I can safely say it was THE BEST concert I’ve been to.
It was wonderful that they paid homage to the late great Freddie Mercury. I can just imagine Freddie smiling and saying “yes, the show must go on” 🙂

  • October 20, 2014 at 4:06 am

The Chicago papers gave Queen & Adam glowing revues among others. The few lackluster ones were pitifully misguided. The first concert kicking off in Chicago was first class. From the lighting, giant Q which supported homage to Freddie, via video clips from Queen’s early days, closeups of Brian May’s masterful fingers creating guitar magic, Roger Taylor amazing energy and prowess were brilliant! Queen and Adam fans alike were thrilled, moved and mesmerized. Above all, Adam finding the perfect balance of bringing his powerful interpretations of Queen’s iconic music without losing the integrity of the intent of the songs were a tribute to his sensitivity and regard for the legendary Freddie and Queen. We fans consider the source of the mediocre, listless reviews that reflect upon the uninformed reviewers that in some cases were not even present. The errors are blatantly evident when they credit Adam singing a song that Brian May or Roger Taylor actually sang. It’s laughable and the sold out venues and demand for additional concerts in Asia, Australia, NZ. the UK, etc. speaks for itself. The media doesn’t know what to do about Adam. He can’t be labeled and put into a box. He can sing any genre of music to perfection and there is a stigma attached to being on a reality show. Adam being a gay man seems to be a threat to some of these media hackers. It must kill them that Adam is so attractive and revered by so many women of all ages, races and countries as well as men. Radio has become irrevelant as well as the autotuned, lip synching performances that hide the less talented. There was no need for an opening act or 20 backup dancers filling the stage or back up singers that may be needed for other performers but not Adam or Queen. We are there to see them and no one else. Real music, stage presence and exceptional entertainment. Adam has earned the Queen crown and we are the privileged ones to see the magnificent collaboration of music at it’s finest. Brian May & Roger Taylor are at the top of their game. The years have only increased their abilities. A new generation is experiencing greatness. Media will be left in the dust! 🙂

The writer of this article has hit the nail on the head. He/she has caught the essence of the Queen + Adam Lambert collaboration? It was “magic” watching the commadarie of the band members on stage. Adam is a magnificent entertainer and he triggers feelings of happiness, fun, positivity and sexiness. This writer’s article was enjoyable to read because those of us who attended the QAL concerts could tell this author not only attended but also understood the “magic”.

Totally spot on. But the Question is WHY???
They performed twice in my state and there was NO coverage, NOTHING, no reviews, nothing. Because it sold out in one day? Our state paper covers small random acts all the time, but ignored the phenomenon that was Queen + Adam Lambert.
    Thank God for the internet!!

Yes, we Glamberts fell in love with Adam when he first sang “Bohemian Rhapsody” acapella for his Idol Audition. Not since Elvis have I been so excited about a new talent and a concert “groupie.” The friendships we have made in pursuit of all things Adam will last a lifetime; we adore his singing, his albums; his flair; his style; his humility and generosity. We dearly love how he loves us “his Glamberts” and will stop and take pictures with us on the street. Adam has truly changed many lives as attested by his glambert entourage who even follow him across the pond-both ways and his 2 million Twitter followers. We have been doing this since 2009 (giving testaments) and don’t intend to stop. Thank you for this article; it just affirms what we know to be true.

I wonder at any relevance of local media to a show that has ALREADY HAPPENED. So a reviewer in City A disses the concert (if s/he even saw it), how is that relevant to the sold-out attendees of City B? Silly, really.

What’s important and pathetic is that MSM didn’t report on the US-wide phenomenon of an iconic, legendary rock band selling out all venues (when many A-list performers were not), especially because of their new front man’s phenomenal voice, charisma, stage presence.

This is precisely why glamberts, along with the positive long-time Queen fans are currently Queen’s most productive and dedicated PR “teams” on the interwebs. Who the fuck cares about MSM anymore? I haven’t picked up or logged into an MSM site in years.

You seem to miss the fact that most of the reviews were positive including one from Michigan (Gary Graf) who years ago said Adam should never sing with Queen. He raved about the show. It’s unfortunate that a couple reviews from the LA Times and New York Times sucked and it appears they weren’t even at the show. The rest were fabulous. Adam and Queen sold out venues that even Michael Buble couldn’t sell out in Canada and Lady Gaga in Australia. This is a quality show and I’m glad I got to witness this. Thanks for the article.

The article I just read made my heart melt and my face smile. The author sure gets it. Adam is incredible and yes his “Glamberts” support him in everything he does. He truly is a one of a kind. His talent is out of this world. To put it as Brian May has. His voice is “one a billion”. The concert I witnessed in Toronto was amazing. I didn’t want to leave when it was over. I was in awe of what I just saw. I only wish I could go to a hundred more!!
