HOT METRO FINDS: Riot Fest 2015 – Could Detroit Be A Possibility? – Ted Cantu
When will Detroit finally get it? MUSIC IS GREAT BUSINESS….. Just ask Chicago. They understand entertainment as a business. They have great influence in film production, tv production and music festivals. They have a government that understands business so they get things like zoning, utility cooperation and have actually built a substantial infrastructure. Not bad for a city plagued with gang warfare and other social ills.
Detroit on the other hand has only dabbled in entertainment on this level. We had an ABC cop show filmed here that did a few episodes a couple years back. “Detroit 1-8-7” and it was cancelled. We had the Transformers movies filmed here too. We could use more of that sort of thing. But the most intriguing out of all of this was a music festival held down in Belle Isle in 2013 featuring the Red Hot Chili Peppers. This was a step in the right direction. Metallica was there too I think. I am going to look into the details a bit more but this sort of thing gets people excited.
This sort of thing is also great for the city. But Detroit has not taken things to such extremes as Chicago. The 2014 concert season brought in two major rock festivals including Lollapalooza which got major press and media coverage including XM Satellite Radio and Riot Fest. These were less than a month apart and have brought in a lot of people into the state of Illinois and that was great for their economy.
In Detroit, we have nothing but open space and time. Lots of time. Lots of space.
We need to be doing more as a community.
