DETROIT - The movie "Terminator Dark Fate" is an amazing production. This is not going to be one of the film reviews that trash the movie. Instead, I'm going to give this movie the epic praise that it deserves. This over the top extravaganza is directed by Tim Miller, (Thor Dark World, Girl With The Dragon Tattoo). The new Terminator film gives the audience what it has come to expect over the years and that is loads of senseless violence. The Terminators are back and this time they are of Mexican descent, with wicked knives, and for some reason, this seemed to zip right by the race-baiters. Now just a word of caution, I am going to unleash some spoilers for this movie.

The fans hated this movie for obvious reasons. This movie is over the top violent and insane. Many of the Terminator fans think this series has ended all usefulness. It gives us what we have come to expect from 1991 and that is gratuitous violence using state of the art graphics. The special effects are the real star of the film and it takes something away from the actors. This version of the Terminator allows it to split into two different entities. One is of these entities is Mexican and it separates into a black metal evil-looking exoskeleton made up of liquid metal. The first twenty minutes of the movie is over the top and unintentionally hilarious. It was difficult not to laugh at some of the drama that was building. The Terminator comes from another time and dimension to land in present-day Mexico City, Mexico. The Terminator is trying to find its body and goes through a couple of the local villagers' bodies before choosing what character to take. The resulting scene is like a violent Three Stooges movie shot inside an industrial warehouse. It is by far one of the best laughs I have had at the movies in a long time.

Linda Hamilton is back and she is looking rough but is nonetheless a kick-ass heroine. She meets up with a local Mexican girl and a new Terminator that goes by the name of Grace, who is also from the future. Together they go on a road trip adventure and try to find out their purpose in this miserable life. That trail leads them up to a secret set of co-ordinates that are sent to Hamilton's phone. Once this makeshift crew tracks geo-target coordinates down they find that it leads to the door of Arnold Schwarzeneggar, (the main bad guy Terminator from the first movies) who is alive and well living in Texas. Arnold comes back as a good guy here and is ready to lend a hand. He is happily raising a family of all things in the middle of the woods. There is a bit of understanding that needs to take place to follow the plot and that means making room for the time travel narrative. This is all worth it in the end because the film has a fantastic pace.

The Mexican terminator is out there on foot and is looking to kill the young girl. She is going to give birth to someone that will bring down the whole Terminator regime in the future. You have seen this plot before so it is nothing new. The violence is over the top and so are the action sequences. This movie is enjoyable and knowing that it is pissing off the serious fans puts a smile on my face. This is so silly how can anyone get so emotionally warped over it? Linda Hamilton is in the final scene and she says something to the Mexican Terminator that made me bust out laughing. She curses the evil Terminator and says, "Fuck you! You metal mother fucker!" There wasn't time to cover my mouth and I just let it all out. What a horrendous, and outrageous plot, but damn it feels good to be at the movies.

I hear that this is going to be the last Terminator movie in the series. But these things have a way of making their money back and winning the fans back in for one more adventure. I found it overall pretty enjoyable and oddly memorable. Sad to say that this was one of the best films that I saw in 2019 and that is saying something a bit profound. On one hand, I need to get out more and on the other hand, this movie is pretty damned good and not as bad as people say. I am up for Terminator 7: One Mo Time at the IMAX.

EXTRA GOODIES: The fine folks at AMC have also added a special drink at the bar called, you guessed it, "The Terminator" which looked to me like a Grog and filled with straight booze and a little coke. You will definitely need an Uber if you down one of these. I asked the bartender how many of these things he actually sold. He kind of grinned and said, "I think maybe I sold one or two of those". It came with a special commemorative plastic cup with actors' faces. A fine memento for a fine film. Aye Carumba !!
